56th Thessaloniki International Film Festival

For the 56th year in a row Thessaloniki hosts the International Film Festival which has become the perfect socializing event for film lovers and emerging filmmakers as well as one of the best cultural events all over the world.

The Thessaloniki International Film Festival is the top film festival of South Eastern Europe, the oldest festival in the Balkans and the presentation platform for Greek productions. This year’s TIFF is oriented towards the independent cinema and will be featuring films from all over the world, tributes and parallel events from November 6th to November 15th that will sure amaze all visitors.

BALCAN SURVEY

The 56th Festival starts with the Balkan Survey section, where famous directors and promising filmmakers, the majority of which are women, emerge in many social themes. This year, Balkan Survey honors the work of the Romanian director Mircea Daneliuc, one of the most important and influential filmmakers, whose work during the 80s in Romania has greatly influenced the younger generations. Daneliuc will visit Thessaloniki to introduce his films to the TIFF’s audience.

OPEN HORIZONS & SPECIAL SCREENINGS

The Open Horizons section includes a variety of filmmakers in the independent film scene such as Isabelle Huppert, Gabriel Byrne, Jesse Eisenberg and David Strathairn. Some of this year’s most anticipated films will be also screened as part of the Special Screenings section. Amongst them, Aleksandr Sokurov pays a tribute to the Louvre Museum and László Nemes reflects the horror of the Holocaust.

GREEK CINEMA

The Greek cinema stars in the 56th Thessaloniki Film Festival, with 21 feature films, 16 short films – awarded at the Festival of Drama – and 40 Greek animated films, in a tribute to the 70 years of Greek Animation. Indeed, the Greek presence in the 56th TIFF is very important this year, with the Agora Works in Progress, but also with the digital library, giving authors the opportunity to promote their work and come in contact with professionals of the international Film Scene.

The Festival honors the Greek filmmaker Nikos Kavoukidis with a film capturing his creative path in the Greek cinema for six decades. In addition, during the TIFF, 14 of the most anticipated Greek recently produced films will be presented.

LUX PRIZE & OTHER TRIBUTES

Finally, the audience will have the opportunity to watch the three films of the Official Competition of the 2015 LUX Prize, celebrate the work of the French director Arnaud Nteplesen and follow the spotlight to the new Austrian cinema.
