Northern Greece is filled with some of the most important natural areas when it comes to flora and vegetation that help maintain the balance of the overall ecosystem.

THE PRESPA NATIONAL PARK

In particular, the mountainous regions in Varnountas and the rare Juniper forests.

With forests and meadows containing some of the rarest plant species in all of Europe and at least 23 endemic species of plants not found anywhere else in the world.
THE TOPS OF ATHOS

Another magical place home of many rare and endemic species found nowhere else in the world including the well-known Violet of Athos.

The famous lake of Kerkini hosts the only “sunken” forest in all of Europe as due to the rain, the level of the water of the lake changes and the willow forest is mostly covered with water. This sunken forest features many rare species worth discovering.
THE REGION OF RODOPI

Especially the virgin forest of Fraktos, the birch forests as well as the forests of the Alnusincana can only be found in this area along with a rare number of endemic species and insectivorous plants such as the Lily of Rodopi and Drosera Rotundifolia.

There are several less known mountains in that region of Greece featuring some rare and important flora species such as Menoikiou in Drama, Bourinou in Kozani, Beles in Serres and Pangaiou in Kavala.
VORAS, OR ELSE KAIMAKTSALAN

In Voras one can find a great variety of vegetation in one of the most extensive swamps with moss in the region.

It is the only intra-continental lake with brackish water and significant vegetation.
Most of these areas have already been designated as Natura 2000 while some are now considered national parks.
